Riding

I was making a presentation at a local historical society about Snowboarding in Southern Vermont. I was asked the question “when did the term ‘ride’ become associated with snowboarding?” I had no idea. Was it always “riding”? Was it “boarding” first? Is it a silly question, which is what I was thinking when asked?
