One local rider who went big in the pipe was Hobie Chittenden. In 2017, Ross Powers stated that "he was a legend around here ... he was a really talented guy.”[i] In 2000, Neil Korn called Chittenden “the most grizzly, dirty, hardcore redneck you’ll ever meet” who “almost always smells from motor oil, but never B.O.”[ii] Chittenden learned to snowboard in 1987 in upstate New York and came over to the US Open as a spectator. Chittenden said, “I caught wind of the snowboarding thing somehow and I needed to look into it a little bit more.”[iii] With such humble beginnings, Hobie progressed through the sport. Powers continued, “He was good all-around athlete …He did it all back then. It wasn't his favorite but he could do well racing and then freestyle, he could just charge and had such good style and such good pop and go big." [iv]
